I started thinking about Halloween in the summer, when a friend (who has a little girl 3 days younger than Jed) asked, "So, have you thought about what Jed is going to be for Halloween yet?"
I hadn't. But then I started. What would I dress Jed up as? It had to be clever, of course. It had to be cute. It had to be fun, and it HAD to be, on the whole, awesome. I knew the qualities it needed to have, but I couldn't for the life of me think of what it could be. I thought about animals, I considered comic book characters, I pondered various puns. I gleaned ideas from Google, and perused Pinterest. But nothing I saw spoke to me (except for a few that said "I dressed my child like this because I'm a psycho").
And then I saw it. And it said "THIS is the costume you've been looking for." A child, who looked slightly older than Jed, stood holding onto a PVC-pipe walker, dressed like a grandpa and with balloons floating above his head. He looked very serious, and it was the cutest thing I'd ever seen.. The caption said he was Carl Fredrickson from the movie UP. I LOVE the movie UP. And let's be honest, I can't think of anything cuter than dressing a baby like an old man.
I made Jed a walker out of PVC-pipe, and wrapped it in silver duct-tape. He wasn't comfortable holding onto it at first, until I weighted it with rolls of pennies ($13 worth!). I painted some glasses from the thrift store black, until the paint started coming off onto his sweaty little hands - at which point I took the paint completely off and used a black Sharpie instead. The dog, Doug, I found at the thrift store, and the balloons I bought at Party City. The clothes were a combination of what we already had and more thrift store bargains.
I had to work on the night of the church Trunk-or-Treat (and Halloween night as well), so Scott took Jed and showed him off for me. I got some pictures that day before I left for work, and set up another photo shoot in my friend Emily's front yard a couple days later.
Jed couldn't have been cuter.
