playing catch-up: utah summer 2014

I have done a thing that I hate doing - let myself get so overwhelmed with all the catch-up I need to do that I am now more behind than ever. Every time I would start to write a blog post about what we did over the summer, I'd only get a couple sentences in before the enormity of the task led me to start doing something else instead (and trust me, there were always 50 other things I could do in place of blogging). So now that it's 2015 and I am several months and several trips behind, I am going to just do it. Just write. Forgive the lack of detail (especially on the heels of my posts about being in Texas!), but I'd rather post this than nothing. If I don't post something, I'll never move on with my life and will just fall further and further behind.

So, here goes.

We arrived in Salt Lake City on Sunday afternoon (June 29th), and Don picked us up from the airport.  I was still exhausted from Girls' Camp, and Jed was tired because he had only slept for 20 minutes on the plane.  The best part about the plane ride, though, was that we were on the same flight as the Dixons - friends of ours from the ward.  Jed and Maylee thought it was so fun to be on the plane together!

Monday morning we took things somewhat slowly, and did some shopping that needed to be done (groceries, new shorts for Rachel, a baptism dress for Penelope).  Then we drove to Bear Lake and started off with some raspberry shakes, followed by 2 hours at the beach.  The kids had a blast!  When we returned we had hotdogs and hamburgers (courtesy of George, who had stayed behind to work).

Tuesday morning we left for Vernal, Utah, where we were staying for 2 nights.  On the way we stopped at Hill Air Force Base to see all the airplanes they have on display, and then the Utah Field History museum (all about dinosaurs).  That evening we checked in at our cabins and had s'mores before going to sleep.

The next day, the small children (Rex, Christian, and Jed) stayed back with Don and Carol, while the bigger kids and adults went white water rafting on the Green River in Dinosaur National Monument. We first stopped to look at some etchings on the side of some cliffs, that were thousands of years old. We rafted for 4 or 5 hours, stopping to eat some lunch part way through.

Over the next couple days we hung out in Logan, went to a rodeo, ate delicious food, and watched some fireworks in the football stadium at Utah State. The stadium seats were uncomfortable and the music was loud, but the company was good and the show was great.

On Saturday, we hiked on Antelope Island and swam in the Great Salt Lake. The scenery was beautiful! Jed thought that the Salt Lake was so much fun because he was light enough to nearly float completely. He was less than thrilled, however, when he got some salt water in his mouth. The brine flies on the shore were quite impressive (and disgusting) - thousands and thousands of them created a solid black layer on the sand, which would dissipate the moment you put your foot down anywhere (and quickly re-form when the space was no longer occupied).  When we got back to Logan, the kids put on a talent show. I didn't think that Jed would do anything, being quite shy, but he decided to sing the alphabet. The applause he got seemed to spark something in him, and after we returned to Maryland, he suddenly wanted to perform for me all the time (and would insist that I clap for him if I didn't do it spontaneously).

Monday evening we went to my Aunt Stephanie and Uncle Dave's house, so they could take us to the Salt Lake airport on Tuesday morning. It was so nice to see them again! Jed loved playing with their girls and on the trampoline outside, and Dave made us a delicious dinner of steak and chicken. After the kids went to bed, the adults stayed up later than we should have, talking. Definitely worth it though. Tuesday morning, Stephanie dropped us off at the airport, and we were very ready to get back to Maryland. Sadly, though, I had made a mistake with our tickets - we originally meant to buy return tickets for Tuesday, but changed our minds right when we bought them and decided to stay until Wednesday (mostly because they were cheaper). But I had it written on my calendar, and already in my brain, that we were flying home on Tuesday. So we showed up to the airport on Tuesday and lo and behold, we couldn't pick up our boarding passes! We called Scott's mom to come and get us, and we stayed our final night in Logan. Eventually, we made it home to Maryland!
