brilliant

I'm taking a quick break from blogging about our summer trip to tell you why I'm a genius.

PROBLEM:
The easiest way to feed Jed bottles on the go (specifically, on an airplane) is to have pre-measured bottles of water, into which we can pour the pre-measured formula, and which we then shake up and feed him with.  The first couple of times I flew with Jed, I poured water into the bottles before the flight, screwed on the nipples, and loaded up the diaper bag with the appropriate number of bottles (plus an extra).  It should have been great.  The issue is that in order for a baby to be able to drink out of said bottles, there must be holes in the nipples.  So they leak if turned on their sides or upside down.  I knew this, of course, and was careful to keep the bottles upright at first.  But inevitably, the bottles got jostled around a little - and when I had to put the diaper bag under the seat in front of me, or in the overhead compartment, there was nothing I could do to keep gravity on my side.  So they spilled.  And the contents of the diaper bag got wet.  Not soaking - I didn't lose LARGE amounts of water - but damp enough to be annoying, plus I had to replace the ounce or so in each bottle that spilled, which almost entirely defeated the purpose of pre-filling the bottles in the first place.

As I have visited friends and family in the last couple of weeks, I've been keeping my eye out for lids from juice bottles or other containers that might fit the baby bottles.  Alas, I didn't find any.

SOLUTION:
As I began to pack for our flight back to DC this morning, I had the thought of using plastic to solve my problem.  I found some saran wrap in a kitchen drawer, cut off a piece (I also cut up a Ziploc bag, just to see which works better), and placed it on top of a bottle filled with 6 oz of water and pulled it tight.  I then screwed the nipple on, turned the bottle upside down, and VOILA!  No water spilled out.

And that is why I am a genius.

  1. Have you figured out a way to avoid camelbacks from building up pressure and leaking during after take off? Contents of my diaper bag still get wet if I don't remember that the pressure will build up in those sippy cup and in my water bottle...K has gotten sprayed one or two times;) we are excited to come visit on thursday!
